Curly Haircut for a Round Face: Dry Length Past the Jawline, Layers Below the Chin

For a round face, a curly cut works when the dry length passes the jawline by 1 to 2 inches and the shortest layer starts below the chin, so side volume does not sit at cheek height.

Dry check Pass Fail
Front length, dry 1 to 2 inches below the jawline Ends at the jawline
Shortest layer Starts below the chin Starts at the cheekbone or jawline
Back outline Falls in a narrowing line, with no straight line across the back Ends in one straight line across the back

Dry length, measured dry

Judge the length dry, not wet. Curls rise as they dry, so a length that sits at the jawline while wet will sit above the jawline when dry, and the dry check above will fail. The working interval is 1 to 2 inches below the jawline. That interval is 1 inch wide, because 2 minus 1 equals 1, and its middle is 1.5 inches below the jawline, because 1 plus 2, divided by 2, equals 1.5. Use the middle when you want one number to say in the chair, and use the full interval when you want room for curl spring on the day.

The back check

A front length that passes the jawline does not settle the back. One Reddit commenter summed up the back problem in one sentence.

"my problem is the back is falling in the boxy shape"

Check the back in a second mirror before you leave the chair. The back should fall in a narrowing line as it goes down, with no straight line across the back at one height. If the back ends in one straight line at the same height as the sides, it will read as a box even when the front passes the jawline, because the eye will stop at that back line first.

Volume or definition, not both at once

On Reddit, one commenter presented the styling choice as a trade, not as a trick that gives both results at once.

"You may have just less hair than him but also his seems brushed out a bit. Have you tried brushing out yours, especially if you care more for volume than definition."

Brushing out lifts volume and breaks curl clumps apart, so definition falls. Leaving the clumps unbrushed keeps definition, so volume stays lower. Pick one priority before the cut, and tell the stylist which loss you will accept, because a cut booked for volume and judged for definition will always feel wrong, and the reverse is true as well.

The price check

Price does not prove fit for a round face with curls. A Reddit commenter wrote the following sentence.

"My hair looks better when I literally hack it off in the bathroom with poultry shears than when I've spent up to $300 on "curly cuts""

The next Reddit commenter put the price choice in equally plain terms.

"I've always said, if I'm gonna cry after a haircut, I'd rather cry after a haircut for free instead of $150"

What two commenters do at home

Two Reddit commenters report cutting at home, rather than reporting a salon result.

"I always do the three pony tail hair cut, and it turns out perfect every time."

"Literally this, I just do a slightly modified version of that cut"

Those two reports give no dry length, no layer start, and no back check, so they do not replace the dry check. A modified version is still a version, not a second method, and a report that it turns out perfect every time is a report about those two people, not a promise for a round face with curls.

How the numbers were set

The 1 to 2 inch interval below the jawline is taken from the front-length rule on this site's chubby-face page. The shortest layer below the chin is taken from the rule on this site's best-haircuts page that the shortest layer initiates below the chin line. The interval width of 1 inch and the middle of 1.5 inches are self-calculated from that interval, as shown above. No other length in this page comes from an outside source.
